Four In Art: Literature or Deep Space Intrigue

I'm in an art quilt group called the Four In Art. There is a theme we build our quilts around and this go around it is literature. There are quite a few deep concerns and ideas that others are tackling. But my immediate thought was highlighting my love of with Science Fiction. Sometimes I think because it a "fun" genre it doesn't get quite as much, mmm... Respect or credit. There are so many incredible authors and worlds to discover.

This quilt came to be by re-reading The League Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. There was a while when I couldn't read sci-fi and diving back into the Ichidian Universe was a balm for my mind. There is interplanetary intrigue, there are spies, assassins, Emporers and the fight between good and evil. Or the fight between good and mostly good or sort of bad.

It is set in the future at some point and traveling through space is a given. So I eventually came around to a hybrid tactical and space suit. For both fighting purposes and spaceship/planetary movement. I kept focusing in my mind on just one section to show the texture of the suit. What you see is a chest portion with the lower left curve being the part that covers the sternum and the right wrapping around the ribs.

The space between the protective plates is silver and black and there is Kona Cotton and Shot Cotton as well as quilt prints. Aurifil 40 weight was used for the quilting and attaching the different pieces. And, as last time, it's backed in a Lotta Jansdotter white and grey mid-century spacey feel print.

The other Four In Art-ers are revealing today as well:

  1. I am happy that you are back to reading, and I think that scifi is a great way to slide back into the printed word. I remember hearing Ursula LaGuin at a Writers Week event here at our local university, and she noted that it was years before her fiction garnered critical acclaim, but that now she was firmly in the stable of classical writers. Scifi has come of age! The interpretation is wonderful! I love the use of these charcoals and browns to bring out the idea of utilitarian, and the slivers of these functional parts of their tactical/space suits convey a hardness and a practicality against whatever these travelers may find in their galaxies.

And of course, I love the back. Thanks for being a part of our Four-in-Art!

  2. I think it's grand to pull just one thing from your inspiration and interpret that (have already considered such for our 3rd mini). This piece is modern, organic, well constructed and perfectly quilted!!! Great job, love it.

  3. So cool. I will have to show this to my husband. I read some Sci Fi, he reads it by the boat load. Great interpretation, and I like how you focused in on an area, instead of trying to recreate a whole. Very nicely done!

  5. Wonderful and interesting design using such a minimal amount of colors. The tactical space suit idea is so interesting - it's something that protects us from the harsh deep space environment, without it we would be sucked into the dark pull of space. Keep your ideas moving forward, I can't wait to see what interesting design and concepts you come up with next time.

  6. Your mini shows a great deal of precision in its construction...as I would imagine is needed in the construction of a protective spacesuit. I see the padding and contours of the areas that cover specific parts of the body. I am trying to imagine the individual who is wearing this suit. Great interpretation.
